Oak Sauna Whisk
A venik, also known as a vihta or sauna whisk, is a bundle of leafy branches traditionally used in sauna. Birch and oak are common, though eucalyptus and other aromatic plants are also used.
Different whisks bring different textures and scents to the sauna. Oak veniks have broad, sturdy leaves that hold heat well and create a fuller, heavier sensation when whisking. Their aroma is subtle, earthy, and woody rather than strongly fragrant.
Before use, soak the venik in warm water for about 20–30 minutes, or until the leaves and branches have softened and become thoroughly hydrated.
Shake off the excess water, then use the venik to gently tap, sweep, or lightly whisk the skin. It should feel stimulating, not painful. You can also wave the venik through the hot air above the body to move heat and steam toward the skin. Oak leaves are larger and firmer than many other sauna whisks, so they are especially good for moving warm air toward the body and briefly holding heat against the skin.
Start gently and work from the arms and legs toward the torso. The goal is not to hit hard, but to combine heat, movement, aroma, and touch into a more immersive sauna experience.
As the venik warms, its leaves release aromatic compounds that add another sensory layer to the sauna.
